Schedule Your Mammogram Online Now

A mammogram is a safe, low-dose x-ray of the breast. It is currently the most effective method of detecting breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. Early detection of breast cancer may allow more treatment options. It could mean saving your breast or your life.

Please remember The American Cancer Society now recommends annual mammography screenings for women age 40 and over. This screening can save your life. Please contact your primary care physician before scheduling, as a prescription is required for insurance coverage.

Look Good, Feel Better

Look Good…Feel Better is a free, national public service program dedicated to teaching female cancer patients beauty techniques to help restore their appearance and self-image during cancer treatment.

Each group session usually consists of 4-6 women and is led by a beauty professional. Through practical hands-on experience, the women learn a make-up program and are shown beauty tips about wigs and turbans. Women learn how to cope with the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment while socializing with other women. It is geared toward increasing self-esteem and instilling self-confidence.

Class meets on the Third Wednesday of every month, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

For more information, or for an appointment, please call 313.593.7175.

Your Mammogram: How to Prepare For It and What to Expect

What to wear
Wear a two-piece outfit because you will have to remove your shirt for the exam.  Do not apply deodorant, talcum powder, perfume or lotions to the under arm or breasts before the exam.

What to bring
You need your prescription from your doctor, all previous mammogram results, along with a referral slip if needed.  Without your prescription, the mammogram cannot be performed and it will be necessary to reschedule.

The actual exposure time for the mammogram is brief, but the appointment is scheduled for 30 minutes so the technician has time to explain the procedure and make sure they have an interpretable x-ray.  Please inform the technician if you have noticed or experienced any changes in your breasts, or if you have noticed any lumps.  You also need to let the technician know if you have had previous breast surgery or if you have breast implants.
